Conflict Resolution

One of the greatest benefits of becoming affliated with the Life/Team leadership system has been in the area of realtionships! The LLR 459 cd by Orrin Woodward  conflict resolution has helped us in many different areas. At work, with our children, in our marriage and business'. Many relationship problems start because of unfufilled expectations.  There are 5 steps to addressing and resolving a conflict.                                                                                                                                                     1. Affirm the relationship-I am here even though it is uncomfortable because I value this relationship. 2. Seek to understand-from the other persons vantage point- dont justify yourself  3. Then Seek to be understood- this does not mean seek to be right  4. Own responsibilty- by genuinely apologizing- hurting someone might not have been the intention but that doesnt change the result. 5. Seek agreement- reunit on the common vision- what is the big picture? Sometimes this means you have to agree to disagree. Another great resource from the LIFE system is the book Crucial Conversations by Patterson, Grenny, McMillian, Switzler. In chapter 6 it talks about master my stories. Just after we have a failed expectation of someone we immediately tell ourselves a story about what just happened! Most times we are placing motives on the other person. If we can learn the skills to take control of our stories we tell ourselves about others and circumstances that happen to us we can change our feelings about them too! Or like Orrin says we need to reframe things in our own minds! This reminds me of the story of the man with 3 small very distruptive children on the bus! Most people choose to assume the worst that he was a bad parent just ignoring their misbehaving. Then one lady made a comment to him about how he isnt a very good father.  He quickly apolgized saying" Im so sorry we just came from the hospital where their mother has passed away! These type of misconceptions  happen everyday without you ever even realizing it! One of the greatest blessing in our lives has been having mentors like Orrin and Laurie Woodward who can help us to learn these valuable skills by physically demonstrating (like Larry VanBuskirk says) through their own lives -not perfect people but people who are always striving for excellence in every area of thier lives!
